Pinochet Ugarte, Augusto
► (n. 1915) Militar y político chileno. Dirigió la sublevación contra el gobierno constitucional de Allende y asumió la presidencia de la Junta Militar en 1973 y la jefatura del Estado en 1974. En 1988 fue derrotado en las urnas y convocó elecciones en 1990. Sin embargo, antes de entregar el poder a los civiles en 1989, modificó la constitución y se reservó el mando de las fuerzas armadas hasta 1998, momento en que fue designado senador vitalicio. En ese año, la policía británica, a instancias del juez Baltasar Garzón, detuvo al ex-dictador por los crímenes cometidos durante la dictadura, aunque tras varios recursos, fue puesto en libertad. En 2001, de nuevo en Chile, el juez Juan Guzmán ordenó el arresto domiciliario y su procesamiento pero el caso fue sobreseído por incapacidad mental del acusado y en 2002 renunció a su cargo de senador.
